MAINTENANCE, REPAIR AND CONVERSION OF DIESEL GENERATORS

Light movement is useful for every person and for every device. Therefore, a diesel generator must also run – at least once a month and for at least one hour and with a load. It doesn’t matter what type of diesel engine it is as all engine manufacturers require it and it would be very short-sighted to claim otherwise. When the engine is stationary, oil cannot move in the engine, causing resins to form in the lubrication ducts, oil is not mixed and does not travel around in the engine. Since oil has sunk into the crankcase in the engine, the rest of the engine begins to corrode on the inside. The coolant also wants to travel around the engine and not create sediments in the lower points of the engine. The fuel pump also fatigues if it is unable to move properly. If the engine does not start after being out of use for half a year, don’t be surprised when the mechanic tells you that it shouldn’t.

The question arises: could the engine be “trained” without load? The answer is that rather not – engine operating without load is even more destructive for the engine since the diesel generator engine is designed to operate at constant revolutions of 1500 rpm. When operating without load, oil is immediately consumed, oil rings on the piston do not sufficiently press on the surface of the cylinder, and oil escapes into the cylinder, causing soot on the valves, turbo and exhaust pipes. Exhaust enters the crankcase and begins to modify oil from its alkaline state to be more acidic. So, if you need to let the engine run without load, then do so for no more than 5 minutes. Testing the engine with the rated load would be ideal. If there is no load or there is less than 40% of the rated power of the device (diesel generators operating fire protection devices), it is advisable to find additional load for testing. For additional load, either an external load bench is used, or heating elements of convectors are placed in the outgoing air duct, because the fan is present in the form of generator cooling. Devices that are in constant operation get enough work in this regard because generator cooling is present. Devices in constant operation get enough work in this regard.

Oil and oil and fuel filters are changed once a year unless the engine manufacturer indicates a specific oil brand and a 2-year change interval.
Coolant is changed at intervals of two years, or five years if so-called “long life” coolant intended for such an interval is used. The reason for changing the coolant is that the coolant of equipment in hot reserve loses its anti-corrosion properties.
The battery is replaced after five years because by that time the battery has lost a lot of its capacity. If the temperature in the room is high and the diesel generator is not operational, you can deduct one year from the battery replacement interval for each 5 °C that exceeds 20 °C.

Valve adjustment and other engine-related maintenance are engine-based and depend on the manufacturer’s instructions.
